COVID-19 vaccination will help protect you against the COVID-19 virus.

If you have any concerns about your health conditions, consult a physician.

You may experience some side effects after receiving the vaccine, which are normal signs that your body is building protection. Most side effects are mild to moderate, including but not limited to chills, tiredness, headache, or pain with swelling and redness at the injection site. However, a small number of people may experience severe side effects that affect their ability to perform daily activities, but this should resolve within a few days. We ask you to stay in our clinic for a minimum of 15 minutes to make sure there is no acute potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.

If you have a history of allergy, cancer, diabetes, kidney or heart disease or any serious underlying health conditions, you are advised to consult your physician. You can book a TeleMed consult with our physician in case you do not have access to your physician.

COVID-19 vaccines are being tested in large clinical trials to assess their safety. However, it does take time, and more people getting vaccinated before we learn about very rare or long-term side effects. That is why safety monitoring will continue. The CDC has an independent group of experts that reviews all the safety data as it comes in and provides regular safety updates. If a safety issue is detected, immediate action will take place to determine if the issue is related to the COVID-19 vaccine and determine the best course of action.

Nearly all COVID-19 vaccines being studied in the United States require two shots. The first shot starts building protection, but everyone has to come back a few weeks later for the second one to get the most protection the vaccine can offer. The Pfizer vaccine is repeated 21 days later while the Moderna second shot is given 28 days later. A 3rd injection or a booster shot is required after 6 months to boost immunity. For children between ages 5 to 11 years, two shots are required and booster shots are not presently required.

Both the disease and the vaccine are new. We don’t know how long protection lasts for those who get infected vs those who are vaccinated. What we do know is that COVID-19 has the potential to cause serious illness with increased risk for mortality. If you get COVID-19, you are also at risk for giving it to loved ones who may get very sick. Getting a COVID-19 vaccine is a safer choice.

Yes, you should get the COVID-19 vaccine. Due to the severe health risks associated with COVID-19 and the fact that re-infection is possible, vaccination for COVID-19 should be considered regardless of whether you already had a COVID-19 infection.

However, anyone currently infected with COVID-19 and/or with active symptoms should wait to get vaccinated until after their illness has resolved and after they have discontinued isolation.

It is advised to get a vaccine even if you were infected with Covid-19 and have built some immunity.

COVID-19 vaccination should be offered to you regardless of whether you already had a COVID-19 infection. You should not be required to have an antibody test before you are vaccinated. Only a fraction of people show Covid-19 symptoms after infection.

If you have less than four weeks before your trip, a consultation may be of benefit, depending on how long you are traveling and where you are going.

The Covid-19 vaccine needs two shots 3 to 4 weeks apart. It is better to travel a week after your second shot. It is also a good practice to travel a week after taking the booster shot to allow time for general side effects such as tiredness, headache etc. to go away and immunity to develop.

You may need additional vaccines depending upon your destination. Most vaccines will not be effective for two to three weeks unless you have had prior immunization with the specific vaccine. However, vaccination prior to exposure is better than no protection. Older patients may be a candidate for immunoglobulin for prevention against Hepatitis A. Always take the flu vaccine annually, particularly before travel, events or gatherings.

Prescriptions also may be needed for malaria protection and travelers’ diarrhea treatment. If your trip is longer than three weeks from the time of the vaccine administration, then vaccines will be of benefit. The advice on non-prescription health prevention measures may be especially beneficial for those not receiving vaccinations.

If you reserve the vaccine, you will be invited to join our Patient Ally portal where you can enter your demographics and past medical history.

You should also be prepared to detail your health history, current medications, immunizations, vaccines and history of environmental/food/chemical allergies to make sure you can get a Covid-19 vaccine safely.

In general, “Required vaccinations” are for the protection of the visited country against the disease you might bring into their country. “Recommended vaccines” are ones that you should have for your own health protection. Yellow Fever Vaccine is required for travel to some countries whose mosquitoes could acquire the disease from you, if you are not protected from this disease; however, you should also consider other vaccines for your protection such as typhoid, Hepatitis A, and others in countries that require only Yellow Fever vaccination.

During your consult, the physician will recommend the best plans based on your health history, travel plan, cost and other concerns.

Any medication taken has some side effects. During your consult, the physician will address any of these concerns and weigh benefits vs side effects and present you with a choice.

Most vaccines have minimal side effects beyond a slightly sore arm at the injection site. Persons being vaccinated will receive a vaccine information sheet (VIS), which describes the benefits, and possible common and uncommon side effects. You need to inform us of any prior history of adverse vaccine reactions.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS OF CONCERN

If you have one or more conditions in your medical history, you must consult your physician prior to getting a Covid-19 vaccine. We will not be able to vaccinate you without prior authorization from your physician.

• You have previously received a Covid-19 Vaccine and had a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) after receiving the Covid-19 Vaccine
• Have a Bleeding Disorder or I am taking a blood thinner
• Have a Fever
• Feeling sick
• Pregnant or could become pregnant in the next few weeks
• Breast feeding
• Have Obesity (BMI 30 or higher but less than 40)
• I have one or more of these conditions: Cancer, Chronic Kidney Disease, COPD, Heart Condition (heart failure, coronary artery disease or cardiomyopathies), Severe Obesity > 40 BMI, Sickle Cell Disease, Immunocompromised state (weakened immune system) from solid organ transplant.
• Smoking
• Type 2 Diabetes mellitus
• Have received another vaccine in the last 14 days
• Had a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to another vaccine or any other injectable medications
• Have weakened immune system caused by Cancer, HIV infection or I am taking immunosuppressive drugs or therapies
• Have been treated before with epinephrine or EpiPen or had to go to the hospital for that
• Have received passive antibody therapy (monoclonal antibodies or convalescent serum) as treatment for Covid-19
• Had a positive test for covid-19 or were told by a doctor that you have Covid-19

CONTRAINDICATIONS

• Severe allergic reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) or immediate allergic reaction after a previous dose of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine or any of its components

Components include: Polyethylene glycol, Tromethamine, Acetic Acid, Sodium Acetate, Sucrose

History of any immediate allergic reaction to above components in any form or in a vaccine or injectable therapy. If so, please discuss with your physician about the allergen trigger and response before taking a covid-19 vaccine.

You are advised not to get a vaccine from us and consult your physician if you have any of the above contraindications.
